In the early 2000s before YouTube and Spotify existed, people would exchange songs (illegally) on the Internet through various forums. To save on disk space and upload/download time, many people compressed the original songs into MP3s. This was fine for most people, but there were many audiophiles who wanted to listen to the original song in the highest quality.
