Binaural Hearing

Human hearing is not just limited by frequency and intensity but also by our ability to perceive the direction and distance of sound. The brain uses binaural hearing (sound received by both ears) to locate the source of a sound. Our ears are very sensitive to changes in distance due to the difference in time that it takes for sound to reach each of our ears. The shape of our ears also affect the way we perceive sound, which allows us to detect whether sounds are coming from above or below.
